Bio/CV

Srinivas Kuruganti was born in Washington, D.C., but grew up in India. He returned to the United States to pursue a degree in engineering. He currently lives in New Delhi.

For over ten years, he has taught photography at institutions such as the National Institute of Design (Gandhinagar), OP Jindal University, Ashoka University, and SACAC in New Delhi. His workshops and courses often focus on photography as a way of seeing and thinking, with a special interest in analogue and darkroom practice.

In 2001, he started a long-term photo essay on the AIDS epidemic in India. In 2006, he co-founded The Lives in Focus Project. Through interviews, photographs, and videos, it documents the impact of India’s patent law on the country’s HIV+ population. He has also worked on environmental issues, ranging from the ship-breaking yards of Bombay to the coal mining villages of Dhanbad. He has also documented the mining belt in Orissa. Over the last few years, he has been archiving his photographs of 30 years of travels in India, America, and Europe. He is developing three photo books, drawing from his archives: one on mining in Central India, the second looks at his sixteen years spent in New York City, and the third journeys through California, which has now been published as a book.

His work has been shown in New York and London, among other places. Some of the photos from his time in New York were featured in a group show, "The Surface of Things," at the Alliance Française, New Delhi, in 2016. These photos were also exhibited as an installation/performance as part of Five Million Incidents at the Goethe Institut, New Delhi, in 2020. He also has a large collection of photographs he took while living in England. This archive spans eleven years of friendships, community, and family. These photos were part of a group show, PhotoUKIndia, in 2015 at The British Council, New Delhi. This work was part of a group show at the Instituto Cervantes, New Delhi, in 2023. He recently exhibited some work in a group show, All Together Now, at IIC in Delhi.
